About GEAR UP NM

What is GEAR UP?

As established by the U.S. Department of Education, GEAR UP is recognized as a discretionary grant program that supports efforts to increase the number of low-income students that obtain a secondary school diploma and prepare for and succeed in postsecondary education.

Currently, GEAR UP serves over 560,000 students enrolled in over 3,525 secondary schools across 45 states.

GEAR UP New Mexico Goals

The first three goals below are set by the US DOE and shared by all GEAR UP grants nationwide. The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) included the fourth goal in order to ensure that the accomplishments of the program will outlast the funding period.

  • Increase student and family knowledge regarding postsecondary education preparation and financing, and increase the educational expectations of participating students and their parents
  • Increase the high school graduation and college enrollment rates of GEAR UP students
  • Improve the academic performance of students so that they are prepared to do college-level work when they do enroll in postsecondary programs
  • Foster systemic change in GEAR UP schools that will outlast the grant funding
