Community Governance Attorney Program

The Community Governance Attorney program is designed for law students in their final year who are interested in becoming community governance attorneys. Participants commit to a two-year employment agreement with a qualifying employer in New Mexico, focusing on legal services for small political subdivisions and unincorporated communities. Successful completion of the obligation will result in loan forgiveness of awards made under this program.

Eligibility

  • New Mexico Resident (12 consecutive months)
  • In their final year at the University of New Mexico School of Law
  • Intended to serve as a community governance attorney in New Mexico
  • The student must demonstrate financial need

When To Apply

The application opens every year on May 15th and closes on June 15th.

Award

The award is based on the financial need of the student. The award shall not exceed the total cost of attendance at the University of New Mexico School of Law.
 

Duration

  • The award is for a period of one year for students in their final year of law school.
  • Loans are forgiven after two years of service; partial forgiveness for one year.
  • Penalties may apply for non-compliance of service terms upon completion of the participant's legal studies.

Qualified Employers as Approved by the Commission

  • University of New Mexico School of Law.
  • Counties or municipalities with designated colonias.
  • State agencies or nonprofits providing legal services to low-income New Mexicans.
