In 2025, Senate Bill 19 - Board of Regents Training Requirements (SB19) was passed and signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Following the passage of SB19, the New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) developed a governing board training program for regents and trustees serving New Mexico’s public higher education institutions. Governing board members are required to complete ten hours of training during their first year in office. This training covers state laws, financial requirements, and other topics essential to effective governance.
The New Mexico Higher Education Department is responsible for developing and providing all training materials, and remains committed to support governing board members throughout the year.
